It is the most dominant structural component of the virion, which constitutes about ~31%–33% of the total mass of the virion, making it one of the major antigens detected in infected pigs. Now it is regarded as an important target for test and vaccine development. The current anti African swine fever p72 monoclonal antibody is obtained from cell culture and the immunogen is the recombinant p72 protein from E Coli.
