Avian influenza virus (AIV), a type A influenza virus, especially in its highly pathogenic form, can cause a devastating disease in poultry, resulting in severe economic losses. Of the 15 hemagglutinin (HA) subtypes of influenza virus, H5 and H7 are considered to be the most important in gallinaceous poultry.
